One of Discovery News' favorite photographs of the weekend was taken by Bjørn Jørgensen, showing an incredible explosion of color in the sky over Grøtfjord, near the North Norway city of Tromsø (pictured above). The night before, he captured an aurora over the coastal village of Sommarøy ("Summer island"), also close to Tromsø.

2012 seems to become THE year that politicians and private corporation want to heavily strike @ us endusers regarding legal downloads and copyrights-infringements.
This case baffled me today!:

- "In a bizarre ruling, an English court has ruled that in favor of a commercial poster company that argued that a photo that showed a similar (but different) scene taken by a different person in a different place nevertheless infringed the copyright of a poster. What the judge ruled was that photographing a scene that is "substantially similar" to a scene someone else has already photographed infringes the first shooter's copyright.

The judge here ruled that the idea of the image was the copyright, not the image itself. Ideas have always been exempt from copyright, because courts and lawmakers have recognized the danger of awarding ownership over ideas. Indeed, the "idea/expression split" is pretty much the first thing you learn in any copyright class".

Blue Marble 2012 uses the latest data from NASA's newest Earth-observing satellite: Suomi NPP. It's made from several passes taken on January 4, 2012 using the satellite's Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite instrument (VIIRS).

- 'BMW announced their ConnectedDrive Connect (CDC) semi-autonomous driving system, and has just released a new video of it in action. It uses four types of sensors, radar, cameras, laser scanners and ultrasound distance sensors, to stay aware of the car's surroundings. Check out the video.
"However, when the car senses it is behind a slowpoke, it looks for an open lane where it can safely merge at speeds up to 130 km/h (81 mph). If an opening is found, the system will steer the vehicle into that lane, pass the slower vehicle and return to its original lane.
As Dr. Nico Kaempchen explains, "Our main challenge was to develop algorithms that can handle entirely new situations. In principal, the system works on all freeways that we have mapped out beforehand with [a] centimeter accuracy." Created by Berlin-based design studio The Product, this set of three unique turntables was built for the premiere of Volkswagen's new Beetle at the 2011 IAA motor show. Instead of vinyl, it uses discs with concentric geometric patterns to produce music.

While the patterned discs sit below a glass surface where they endlessly spin, the turntable's arms are still accessible, and can be placed anywhere over the discs. The needle at the end of the arm, which is typically used to play or scratch vinyl records, was replaced with an optical sensor that detects the patterns on each disc. As they're detected, they're turned into electronic music through a piece of software called "Ableton Live".

WINTER GARDENS, Calif. -- A 10-year old boy has been charged with murder and assault in the fatal stabbing of his 12-year old playmate.
It happened Monday on a driveway in the 12500 block of Royal Road in the unincorporated Winter Gardens area, near El Cajon. The younger child allegedly stabbed the older boy in the chest about 1:15 p.m.

The suspect was undergoing therapy and taking prescription drugs for his behavioral issues, according to neighbors.

Also included here are tracks from Purple Image and the equally obscure band Black Merda, another Chess act.

A selection featuring such a prominent Hendrix influence wouldn’t be complete with out an appearance by the man himself so we also have an epic slice of his guitar work on the Lightin’ Rod track ‘Doriella Du Fontaine’.

Etta James Has Died

Etta James, the great singer, died today in California of complications from leukemia. She was 72. Over the six decades of her career, James won six Grammys and was inducted into the Rock n Roll hall of fame, survived a heroin addiction and a variety of health problems, and sold millions of records.
In 2009, the Obamas danced to "At Last" — sung by Beyoncé, who played James in Cadillac Records — at the Neighborhood Inaugural Ball. Above, her "I'd Rather Go Blind," recorded in 1968.

What better way to honour this sadly unknown singer than with her sad but jewel of a classic:

"In the city of Odessa, Ukraine this Windows error box was floating. It looks weird but it was not photoshopped or whatsoever.
It's a giant fluorescent tube lit plastic ad-box.
Actually, there was a big fog that night in Odessa and what you see in the sky was an advertisement projection with this Windows error message".

"Human Again" - the Yong knives

The new, long awaited 'Young Knives'- album: "Ornaments From The Silver Arcade" came out in the US today.
Happy-go-lucky-upbeat songs with good lyrics, sounding mainstream, but defenitely aren't.

I’ve always been charmed by The Young Knives’ strange combination of verbosity and vitriol. “Human Again” tones down the anger but maintains an awkward, angular, underdog quality that I find irresistible.
